FAQ
What is People First? People First is a self-advocacy
group for people with developmental disabilities over the age of
18. People First teaches the skills that participants can
use to stand up for their own rights. The group is directed
by people with disabilities that are voted into office by the membership. Members
determine the activities for the group and carry out many of the
planning details. People First of Lincoln works closely with
an advisor from The Arc of Lincoln/Lancaster County. The
local People First chapter is part of the statewide group of People
First of Nebraska.
Why is self-advocacy important? Many people with
disabilities have had little experience in voicing their opinions
or choices. Often decisions affecting their lives are made
by other people. Through People First of Lincoln, people
are able to participate in a variety of monthly activities which
help them learn to make their own decision, acquire assertiveness
skills, speak for themselves, to make choices and decisions that
affect their lives and to accept and fulfill the responsibilities
of those decisions. People First allows participants the
opportunity to learn from each other, build confidence and increase
their capacity to exercise choice in other aspects of their lives.
What types of activities does People First cover? At
People First meetings, members are able to share their concerns
about issues relating to people with disabilities. They are
also able to share their success stories which empower others to
achieve their goals. They learn skills and gain information
that will assist them in leading more independent lives such as
transportation, healthy eating and employment. They also
gain information on topics affecting people with disabilities such
as the importance of voting, legislative issues and self-determination
training.
People First also offers a variety of social activities which involves
members in community activities. These activities include
things such as lunch and a movie, a picnic in the park, dancing
with the Push America Bicyclists and many others. People
First also assists with community activities, such as fundraising
for The Arc of Lincoln/Lancaster County and raising awareness of
people with disabilities in the community.
When does People First meet? Business meetings
are held monthly on the second Saturday from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00
p.m. Meetings will be held at Bennett Martin Public
Library. Social activities take place at various
times throughout the year.
How do I become involved? You can become
a member of People First by paying the yearly membership dues of
$5.00. Members come to meetings and get to vote for new officers
at election time. If you would like to become a member or
have other questions please call 421-8866.
